I would do the project on The Exorcist. Blatty's novelization of a real case of possession that happened in a Washington Suburb. Although the movie portrays a girl in the ral case it happend to a little boy.
According to Rev. Father William O'Malley (who played Father Joseph Dyer in the film), the events depicted in the film are approximately 80% true. He claims the big discrepancies between the movie and reality were: it was a boy who was possessed, not a girl; the possession did not occur in Georgetown, but just outside DC in Cottage City, MD; and the color of the "pea-soup vomit" was not green. He claims that nearly everything else in the movie actually occurred.
The name of the boy who was subject of the "true" exorcism that inspired Blatty's novel was Ronald Hunkeler. After he was "cured" he went on to attend Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC, graduating in 1954. He was later a scientist with NASA. Understandably, he refuses all interviews regarding his exorcism. At last account, he was rumored to be living in Laurel, MD.
You can check out http://www.strangemag.com/exorcistpage1.html
for more information about the boy.

How about the "The Great Escape" which is based on a true mass escape from a German POW camp in world war two?
It was released in 1963 with an all-star cast including James Garner and is an awesome movie.
It was really tragic in real life the Gestapo shot 75 of the prisoners who were recaptured.

"The Mothman Prophecies" is a good one.
It's scary AND a true story. It stars Richard Gere and even PBS did a documentary on the same story that the movie is about.
I'm sorry. It might have been the Discovery Channel that had the documentary, not PBS. Anyway, it really is true and quite scary. This strange phenomenon has been happening all over the world. Even in Russia.
I would choose that movie. It's VERY interesting.

If you want something true, I'm not sure what the exact terms are you have to stick to, but I'd suggest The Laramie Project. It follows the beating and death of Matthew Shepard. Basically the "actually happened" part you can derive most of from the movie but i may be able to find some links for you to research it. I only recommend this movie because it was a tragedy that I hold very dear to me, being a gay man myself. It was a slap in the face. lol me rambling. Anyway try that. Hope I helped.
