My 6 month old cut his first tooth this week, but he is a thumb sucker!. He has made a little "cut" on the bottom of his thumb. How can I prevent this from getting worse aside from weaning him from his thumb. His physician tells me not to stop his thumb sucking yet. Has anyone experienced this? what can be done? Will his thumb get infected?

My son did that when his teeth started coming in and he was sucking on his hand. It should be fine, my doctor said that a lot of babies do this and that its not a problem. Just watch his thumb for possible signs of infection- excessive redness, swelling, pus. If you see any of these things contact your doctor. Otherwise try not worry, he'll be fine.

No, his thumb will be fine. My youngest two were thumb suckers and they eventually had these little "marks" on their thumb from where their teeth rest but his thumb probably won't get infected unless he bites down and breaks the skin.

if its a cut and not a little mark, just make sure the cut stays clean, and it should be fine. if it gets worse, when you see him sucking his thumb, offer him a popcicle to suck on to keep his mind off his thumb. but, i think it should be fine, as long as it stays clean.
