I have sewn before but I would like to know a good sewing machine that is recommended or easy to use for beginners. I have been looking, but really don't know what I want to be looking for. I want to use it to make clothing items.
Thanks!

Don't get one that has too many attachments or complicated extras. If it does too many extra fancy things like embroidery names and such it may just confuse you while you are straight stitching your new blouse or blanket together. Ask at a fabric store of quality, the ones here that sell machines too often will allow you to try the machines and see how they work before you buy. Because they are interested in you making a purchase if you tell them you only want a suggestion they may or maynot be so helpful but it's worth the try. My mother and Grandmother always said the Singer brand of machines were great to work with. Check at Sears. I think they sell that brand, and you can probably get a repairs warranty with your purchase just in case something goes wrong. But even if you don't buy from them always keep your receipt and of course read the instruction book.

Hi,
My first machine that I still have and use along with my others is a Kenmore from Sears. it has been a great machine. Has plenty of stitches and 1/4 inch foot in case you want to quilt in the future. Not to expensive. I also have a Babylock , more expensive but a great machine. Janome are also very good machines. I would go to a local store preferably one with different models available and try them out and pick the brain of the people who work there.

You will need a machine that can make straight and zigzag stitches, with variable stitch tension and length. You will need a zipper foot too, whether it comes with the machine or you buy it separately. You will not need any embroidery stitches, or any computerization at all. Target has some simple machines for around $100, although you can also look at garage sales and thrift stores, as older machines are solidly built, and new machines put weight inside to make it feel heftier than it actually is.

My first machine was a Babylock. I loved it. Very dependable...very good machine. The basic model has everything a beginning sewer needs. I also loved how super simple making bobbins was. Look at a JoAnns, I believe they carry Babylock. My friends have told me beware the Wal-Mart specials, they need more upkeep. They have to be serviced more, they wont last as long. Ive had my Babylock for over 10 years and never have had to have it serviced.

I bought a simple ($99?) one from WalMart and it has been great for me for years. I have made baby quilts, done mending, crafts, and made a few scrub shirts and it has been everything I need. It only has two features (select straight to zig zag stitch and the other for how long the stitch is) and that seems to be enough for everyday use.
