Of two numbers, one exceeds the other by 32. Their sum is 46. Find the numbers.

All I know is how two write it out. (x+32) + x = 46

Going with what you have: 2x+32=46
or 2x=14
or x=7
Therefore, your numbers are 7 and 39.

That's the way to start. Then just combine your like terms
2x + 32 = 46
subtract 32 from both sides

2x = 14

x = 7
so your first number is 7

since your second number is 32 more, it must be 39.

from your equation you combine the x's getting 2x + 32 = 46
subtract 32 from both sides of the equaiton getting 2x = 14
divide both sides by 2 getting x = 7
there fore one of the numbers is 7 and the other is 7+32 = 39
