Karen Horney wrote a lot about personality development and something she called "the tyranny of the 'shoulds.'" It's not difficult to find information about nor hard to understand, and it's a fine topic for perusal at your current level.

You can find more information in the library or on-line. You can do so by turning off the TV for a few hours, putting down the hash pipe and hitting the books.
