I'm not quite sure what you think is b*llsh*t, but the movie, as I understand it, is based on a totally factual story.

In 480 b.c the Persian Empire, under Xerxes, attacked the mainland of Greece, which was not so much a nation in those days, as a collection of City-States. The Spartans under their king, Leonidas, numbering only 300, with about 700 Thespians, ended up defending the pass at Thermopylae, the gateway to Athens.

The tiny Spartan army faced about 20,000 Persians and their allies.

They died, but at great cost to the Persians. Probably the most famous battle of courage against impossible odds.

For the rest.......who knows ?

300 is based on a graphic novel, which is based on a movie, which is based on an actual historical event. The Battle of Thermopylae. Now because it has been fictionalized aspects of the battle have been exaggerated.

Any serious history scholar will tell you that the Persians had a mighty empire and for many years sought to increase the size. Which included an invasion of the Greek city-states.

Some parts of the film are based on truth. The Persian army was massive (a Greek historian said it was 2 million), and the Spartans were a tiny group that used terrain and training to their advantage.

Xerxes, however, was a bearded man and not the fey giant he was depicted as. Spartans wore armour, not skimpy little bathing suits. The list of fictionalized elements is long, but it is a film. I can, however, see why the Iranian government was upset at their depiction. It is definitely an American propaganda piece.

It is not a big lie. It is an unfortunate habit in hollywood to take names and events from history and rewrite them to make movies that sell. No one seriously believes that this movie accurately reflects the Persians. If you are offended, get over it. You might complain about hollywood in general, but this movie is not an exception to the typical behavior of hollywood.

Once again. It was an adaptation of a graphic novel by Frank Miller. It was made and distributed for entertainment and to make money.
