The whole problem with reading books for free, is that somehow, somebody has to get paid for writing those books. It isn't something you can dash off on a weekend and make a million bucks at. It takes between one and two years to write a book - often even more.
Books you read in a library have been purchased, and authors get a royalties from them, just as they do from the books you buy in a bookstore.
If you want people to write books, you have to figure out how to keep authors in rent money and food money, and maybe even have enough left over for a pair of shoes for the kids. And that isn't going to happen if you read them for free on the internet.

Yes, E-books, electronic downloads, which you can save onto your computer and read for free.
Some authors on lulu give free E-books and a new company had established authors giving away a free E-book.

while reading a written book, you're stimulating your brain. You make your literacy and reading skills and you simply in the process, become more literate. Despite having today's modern technology, you nevertheless still need to be able to read.
While you're watching t.v. can be good fun, it isn't doing anything to your brain.
