You can buy seed but you will need to germinate them in a sterile "broth", not something for a beginner. Look for a plant instead. They are only a little more difficult than a house plant. If you think you're on your way to a cheap source of vanilla, think again. Even if you're able to get it to bloom and set seed pods, you have to go through an extensive and complicated fermentation and drying process to get the flavor we all know and love. RScott

I think this would work if you are patient, but vanilla beans (like you buy in the spice section of the grocery store) are full of vanilla seeds.

I've grown dill from store-bought dill meant for seasoning, and it worked. Vanilla beans are a bit more pricier, of course, but there are hundreds of seeds in there!
