Yes, even a newborn infant can get a yeast infection. It is common after a round of antibiotics, especially. You should have it checked by a dr. to be sure it's yeast before you use any anti-yeast creams on it, though. In the meantime, you can treat her by giving probiotics (acidophilus, etc.) which you can get in liquid or powdered form to add to milk, foods, etc., or chewable wafers that you could break into a couple of manageable pieces.

If you have any tea tree oil, or can get some (Wal Mart carries it in their herbal section, a small 2 oz. bottle for about $4.88), it is a strong antifungal (also antibacterial and just generally healthy for healing skin). You can add just a few (like 6-8) drops to her bathwater and see if that helps. No soaps or rash creams for the time being, and as much nakey time as possible to allow the skin to get lots of fresh air.

Personally, I never did take my babies in for the prescription yeast creams, but rather treated them with the probiotics and tea tree oil for several days (with good results). If it went on longer than about 4-5 days, I'd have taken them in, but it was always gone by then. :)

Best of luck! I hope the rash clears up quickly.

Unfortunately yes :( Newborns can get yeast infections for any number of reasons . . . antibiotics, excess moisture, etc. Often moms will think that a yeast infection is just a REALLY REALLY bad diaper rash. OTC athletes foot cream (Lotrimin, etc) is great for treating a yeast infection on a bum. When my son got a yeast infection, the doctor recommended OTC stuff. It worked!! But if it is a yeast infection, treatment of some kind will be needed. Good luck hun!

Most definitely she can. The same happened to a friends baby girl when she was about that age. The mother also cleaned her well but still noticed an odor.
Please take your baby to the doctor ASAP and let the doctor do a thorough examination. My friends daughter had to have an operation to correct a defect. They did some tests first where the baby had to drink some type of barium fluid which they watched go through her system to see where the trouble was--these tests took a few days, because the baby needs to urinate, and her daughter wasn't able to at the time of testing! When she finally cooperated, they were able to see a tiny tube inside her was blocked or kinked and thats when they said that surgery was necessary.
I don't remember exactly the name of the tube, but it was where the urine went through either to or from the bladder or urethra. Now the girl is fine and hasn't experienced any more infections, but during the time she did, she didn't complain much because of course, she was too young, so the mom didn't take her to the doctor right away.
Of course your daughter might not be having the same problem, but better safe than sorry.
Good luck to you!

a person can get a yeast infection at any age whether on antibiotics or not. wal-mart carries a great equate brand anti-fungal cream that works as good as a prescription and costs a lot less. my 6 month old has that slight odor also, but our pediatrician says that when they're that young they still are discharging some of that yucky stuff from birth and that is probably the cause. go ahead and take her to the doctor to have it checked and if your doctor tells you something different please let me know. i'm starting to think mine's a quack.

Yes, a girl can get a yeast infection at any age. My daughter got one at around 10 or 11 months. If you suspect one, take her into pediatrician. She needs Nystantin. It is an anti fungal powder to clear up the infection. Don't let it go if you suspect one. As with any infection, the longer you wait to treat it, the more damage it will cause.

A yeast infection in a child has nothing to do with cleaning her. It has to do with the formula or breast milk she is drinking. It has built up yeast in her body. I would call your doctor to get some anti fungal cream for her. My son had a yeast infection at 2 months....

One of my girls got yeast infections quite a bit. I found out it was because she couldnt have regular juice. It started off she would get what looked like a diaper rash but the regular oitnments like desitine and balmex wouldnt help. Took her to a dr and they said she had yeast infecions and that juice was the probable cause so we started mixing her juice half and half with water to dilute it and it solved the problem for us.
