They left for the same reason the US left in 1973. It wasn't worth fighting an eternal war with no achieveable victory.

The French left after the battle of Dien Bien Phu was lost. Vietnam (Indochina) has a history of fighting guerilla wars against occupying forces. The best explanation I have ever heard of the US defeat in Vietnam is "The vietnamese were willing to lose longer that the Americans were willing to win."

The French learned the same lesson about Vietnamese determination.

The French withdrew since after the defeat at Dien Bien Phu, they knew military victory over the Viet Minh would not come easily, nor would it come cheap. The Vietnamese recieved aid from China and the U.S.S.R. and America financed France's war bill in Indochina (up to 78%).
A Conference in Geneva, Switzerland took place in May, 1954 - between Britain, Cambodia, China, France, Laos, Vietnam (Viet Minh and Bao Dai), the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. The conflict was no longer just between France and Vietnam, many other countries had political interests in this region.
France also other colonies, and it so happened that the war for independence in Algeria began at the same time - 1954.
