I've had mine done twice in the hopes of unblocking at least one of my tubes. I can tell you right now, the doctor who will handle the procedure makes all the difference. I had a different doctor for each procedure. A gentle touch and careful hand makes it easier during insertion of the catether up to the test itself.
The pain will depend on your level of tolerance. It varies for every woman. But, DO take your prescribed painkiller at least an hour before the procedure, in case you can't take the pain when the dye is pushed in.
It will help also to have your husband massage your back and legs after because that's going to cramp up for sure.
Most importantly, make sure your doc prescribes antibiotics for you to prevent infection.
As for results, some women report pregnancy after HSG, but unfortunately, that isn't the case for me. I sincerely hope that this part of your TTC plans will increase your chances for pregnancy.
Good luck and God bless you!

I just had my Hysterosalpingogram yesterday. Prior to it, I had went online and researched the procedure and I found many horror stories. I saw so many posts on the pain and scariness of it. I was absolutely terrified when I went to the appt. I know every woman is different but for me...it was NOT painful at all. I couldn't believe how quick & painless it was. My doctor had me come to the clinic an hour before the actual procedure started. He gave me a shot of Toradol for the pain and then I sat in the waiting room for an hour while the shot worked it's magic. After an hour, a nurse came to get me, brought me to a changing room to change into a gown, then brought me into the lab/xray room. You lie on a table. The doc explains the procedure and then he begins by opening the vagina & inserting a speculum. He then cleans the cervix 3 times with iodine to make sure no infection travels upwards. He just swabs the cervix 3 times, very quick...maybe took a minute. After it's cleaned, he inserts a catheder into the uterus. He said I may feel some pain, but I didn't. After the catheder is in place, he removes the speculum and then you're all set for the dye injection. Placing the catheder takes only about another minute after the iodine swabbing...VERY QUICK! The doctor will now tell you he's ready to inject the dye and that you may feel some cramping. I didn't have any cramping at all. In order for the dye to get inside my tubes evenly, he had me turn to one side (roll onto my side on the table). I turned over, then lied flat again. He told the xray person to take the xray picture, and that was it. He removed the catheder, which I didn't even feel, and then it's over. I got off the table and had some of the injection dye run back out but they bring you right to the bathroom so you can clean up and they will supply a pantyliner in case of further leakage. I was told they only use about 10cc of liquid which isn't much at all. The doc tells you right away if you're tubes are open, you can ask questions, and then it's over. My procedure took about 10 minutes in all (including pre-procedure gabbing, the actual procedure, and post-procedure questions). Very quick and easy. Please don't let all the other posts frighten you. I may have felt no pain solely because of the toradol shot but every woman is different. If they don't offer a shot, you can always ask from something for the pain. I was told Toradol is quite the standard now. Good luck!

From what I understand, the procedure itself is only a few mins long. There will probably be some moderate cramping involved (as there is whenever you mess with the uterus). The test is done to see blockages, but also, sometimes the liquid dye can unclog a minor blockage in the process. If minor blockages have been the problem and if they are flushed out during the procedure, pregnancies have been known to occur within a few months. The test results are immediate and will be reviewed with you and your doctor (if he/she is present) or will be sent to your doctor right away if he/she isn't present.
Keep us posted, good luck.

I had this test done but thank god i was put to sleep. I am not trying to scare you at all don't get me wrong but see i was going to be having a laproscopy done also the next day after i was suppose to have the hysterosalpingogram. I went to the hospital for my test (hysterosalpingogram) and when i got upon the X-ray table (that is where they do it) they told me i would cramp like period cramps and would have a bit of bleeding but as soon as i seen the thing that they put the dye in -the doctor and nurse said i turned white as a ghost (It was a long needle like instrument that looked like it was going to hurt bad) so the doctor just said lets do this tomorrow when you come in for your surgery and they done it while i was knocked out. When i woke up i was hurting. Not god awful pain but it was kinda of bad. (I can't handle pain at all)

I assist with these procedures. Some women have no problem with it at all (like a regular pelvic exam) and some sound like they are giving birth. It varies, so take something for pain and cramping beforehand. Cramping and spotting are both normal afterward. The contrast going through your fallopian tubes can SOMETIMES move a blockage, allowing you to get pregnant.

I had one about a year ago. Yes, it does hurt. (But I had one girlfriend say it wasn't so bad for her and we had the same doctor.) I don't want to scare you but it's painful. It's sever cramping and some very light bleeding afterwards. You will for sure want to go home and rest for the rest of the day. At least you get vicodin. I got nothing! The issues isn't with me so I can't tell you about being more fertile afterwards but I have heard of women conceiving after the HSG. Good luck to you.

That is a must test to be done, I had it done to me, I got pregnant 1 month after that.Guess it really opened up my tubes, now I can get pregnant easily after that procedure.
P.S. It doesn't hurt it's just pretty uncomfortable, since they have to dilate your cervix and it causes mild cramps, I did it without any pain med.

You posted a answer for me and i wanted to post one for you :) i have had a couple of friends to have that done and they all said that it was not that bad and they got pregnant like 2 months after that! and they didn't even find anything wrong. sometimes it just helps for some reason. my fertility doctor told me that a lot of times it just has to do with your cervical mucus as to why you are not getting pregnant and he told me to drink robitussin 3 times a day for six days until you ovulate and i could tell a HUGE difference. so maybe this month will be different. clomid causes thick cervical mucus so the robitussin loosens it up. it makes sense! ha GOOD LUCK!! It will happen to us both! :)
