Depends on where you live. On the East coast they say soda not soda pop. I live in Ohio now and they call it pop here. When I lived in the South, they also called it pop. All over the country, there are different words for different things just as there are different accents in different geographic regions. And of course, everyone who hasn't traveled, thinks their expressions and accents are the standard ones. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I know what your talking about. I was born and raised in MI, moved to GA and now live in TX. Everyone is different and they do look at us Yankees funny when we ask for a pop. People from the south usually say "soda pop" or they offer you a "Coke" then bring you a "Dr. Pepper", that has never made sense to me!

In Texas and much of the south we say coke when we mean a soda, or cold drink. It is like saying Kleenex when we mean facial tissue. Every section of the country has different phrases for things.

I live in Alabama and most folks call all soft drinks "coke". They'll say, "You want to a coke? What kind? Coke, Pepsi, rootbeer or what?

I lived in Ohio for a few years and I was confused when I was offered a "pop" - I didn't know what it was either.

I found this page: http://popvssoda.com:2998/

It is a map showing which terms are used in different parts of the U.S.
