This is largely dependent on what you plan to use the laptop for. If all you plan on doing on your laptop is web browsing, email, and office type applications then you won't need a laptop with a very fast processor, tons of ram and hard disk space. Many people spend way to much on laptops they don't need because of thinking that more money means more quality. In actuality they are buying a system with more power
then they will ever come close to using.

So when deciding what kind of laptop to get consider what you plan on using it for.
---------------------------
If you want a laptop good for web browsing, email, and office stuff (like Word, Powerpoint,etc..) Look for a computer that has something like:

Processor: at least Intel Pentium 4 1.6ghz, Intel Pentium 4 2.0ghz, or similar AMD brand processor.

Ram (memory): Look for at least 512mb

Optical Drives: DVDRW drive for burning CD's and DVD's

Hard Drive: At least 20GB

Internet: Built in Wifi (wireless internet) and ethernet connection port.

Operating System: Windows XP Home
---------------------------
If you want a laptop for work and play (web browsing, email, office apps, media such as music and movies, games, etc..) look for something like:

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.0ghz and up but preferably a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz or similar if you can afford it.

Ram (memory): Look for 1GB but preferably 2GB and up

Optical Drives: DVDRW drive for burning CD's and DVD's

Hard Drive: At least 160GB but go up as high as you want (many people feel you can never have enough!)

Internet: Built in Wifi (wireless internet) and ethernet connection port.

Operating System: Windows XP Home/Pro or Windows Vista if you want to give that a try.

Also might be worth looking at laptops with large widescreen displays
---------------------------

Hopefully this will give you some perspective, if you have any family/friends that know a lot about computers I would recommend sitting down with them and going over what your needs are to determine whats best for you. Also think about how your needs might change in the future, it always helps to think ahead when buying a new PC. Also read reviews on any model your thinking of getting, getting feedback from people who already bought it is always helpful. Also If you travel a lot durability and battery life are going to be huge factors in your decision as well.

Pick a very light one like a Sony Vaio. You will feel that 2 pound for Sony vs 6 lb for HP difference after you cart it around for a while. The Vaio also has built-in wireless for reaching the internet in airports or hotel lobbies and a buit-in video camera for conferencing along with all of the other features you will need for business travel.

slimmest, lightest, and fastest you can get. Look into any of the VAIO TX or G series for 8hr+ battery life, the latest features, and bright displays. Also, the Thinkpad X series are all terrific laptops boasting high quality build, long battery life, and some of the best business features currently available.

Oh, and try to stay away from anything pentium 4...the are horribly inefficient processors for mobile laptops!

there's an excellent array of laptops from HP that at the instant are not truly high priced, in simple terms as long you will get an AMD X2 processor (intel core2 duo processors are expensive, yet you may get the comparable overall performance from AMD X2). Pavilion laptops with amd processors stages from $six hundred+ to $one thousand+, hp is one in each and every of the superb manufacturers and that's truly affordable study to Dell. peace! delight in!
