Is it because of some French reason?

d'Arc or Darc was actually her last name. Her parents were peasants from Domremy, France. The word arc is actually french for arch. An example is the Arc de Triomphe, or Arch of Triumph, in Paris. It's possible that Joan's family name derives from a geographic area in France which once featured a prominent arch, either architectural or natural. Her family may have been caretakers of such an arch, or lived in such close proximity to it that they came to be intimately associated with the feature. Many surnames throughout the world ultimately can be traced back to places.

I do believe Arc was the place where Joan was from.

In the past people didn't have last names and were instead referred to by their birthplaces or hometowns (most often those were the same place because people rarely traveled back then).

For example, Leonardo da Vinci was from Vinci, a place in Italy.

The French abbreviation 'd'Arc' translates as 'of Arc'. She came from a village called Domremy; Arc could refer to the larger area in which Domremy is located. Perhaps it's time you opened an encyclopedia to find out more...

First given that she was from the south of France I would say she was white. It is not impossible that she was black, but from a historical point of view you have to think that a person from a particular country was the native colour/race of that country unless specific evidence says otherwise. Second of all Shakespeare wrote FICTION, but if you want to take it literally, swart and dark could mean heavilly tanned. A distinct possibility for a military leader in the South of France, wouldn't you say?
