In most cases, and where American corporate interests are concerned in foreign countries they ALWAYS would rather have a dictator in place to control the people and pay off the dictator so they are able to pay foreign workers starvation wages. That's how their greed works. When Iran had a democratic president they sent the cia there to agitate and get him thrown out. People who represent Democratic values they call 'leftists', 'progressives', and 'left-wingers'. They say Jesus was a socialist. You figure it out.

As a bastion of democracy, the United States cannot encourage dictatorship; it contradicts everything the United States believes in. Rightly or wrongly, America considers itself the ultimate in free-thinking, liberal society; to support any other system would destroy our national image and global standing even further. America supports democracy in its own image, although I agree that restricted freedoms are necessary for some societies to progress.

The US should neither promote or demote - that is a job best left for the people of that country!
