Many poor people get into Duke on scholarships if they're good athletes.

If they did not have money, the stripper would not have tried to jack them. They would not have had a private stripper. They would have gone to a nightclub and left when their money ran out.

I agree. But their social status doesn't really come into play here. Hard evidence proved them innocent before DNA testing did. Any woman who falsely accuses a man of rape should be thrown in jail for life. This might make so-called "victims" think twice before having a roll in the hay that they later regret when they sober up in the morning. Though they were exonerated on paper, these poor guys will forever be known as "the Duke lacrosse players accused of rape".

in this case no because the "facts" and evidence were so shaky even the dumbest of pro-bono lawyers would have made a big mess about the crappy evidence the DA provided. This was a textbook case of a bad job by the police and DA in investigating and really trying to find the facts. In other cases where it could be a toss up yes but in this case there was too much evidence exonerating the kids.

1. Yes, they'd be on their way to prison if they had to use a public defender.

2. Duke does indeed offer scholarships to many, many students from modest backgrounds. A friend of mine graduated from Duke on a scholarship. He came from a lower middle class background.

In this case there was no evidence to support her claims, and in fact evidence proving her wrong. In court anyone could have gotten them off. Might I add this isn't the fault of the police its all Nifongs fault, he refused to take the evidence.
