Because their employers offer them contracts and the atheletes sign them. Atheletes are like race horses for team owners; most of them don't really care. It is a business and they are making money. It doesn't get any more complex than that.

The second reason atheletes make so much money is supply and demand. People want to be entertained, PERIOD. Professional sports teams "entertain" people in much the same way musicians entertain people.

Maybe your concern regarding this issue are all the 'run-ins' with the law that you here about atheletes getting into. Well, here is your answer.

Phil Jackson once about Michael Jordan. "How do you deal with someone that never has to take 'No' for an answer."

The answer for people that don't like atheletes. Stop watching. The major sports won't make any money and then the atheletes will have to get another occupation. I don't watch anymore; it is depressing to watch SportsCenter when they have to discuss sports figures being hit with charges. What's more the NBA players seem to be unable to win in international competition. How good could they possibly be? Okay, they are damn good but they lack teamwork.

All the engineers I know seem to carve out a decent living for themselves. They all own homes and seem to have nice cars. They can vacation in some of the same places that the rich and famous go.

There is some web site out there that will rank you in terms of the money you make. Apparently, I am in the top 1% of money earners in the World. I don't own a home and I have 2 used cars. I save as much money as I can; pretty much "I'm over it". We all have to "Get in where we fit in..."

There ain't no 'should' in economics. Athletes get what they get, because about 20 years ago they started to realize that they are entertainers and could command what other such talent is getting. The sport is long gone from sport. And if you don't think that most professional sports games are managed to get the maximum viewer exposure and maximum commerical revenue by manipulating scores, timing and violence, I've a got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

i could say that you are wrong.people like engineers etc use their brain to get money. but athletes use their physical strength to get money. it not easy to jump 5 or 7m high like an athlete.they work very hard and spend their life time for one game unlike the engineers. so they get the amount of money

I think reasonable people should pay lots just for the honor of being in the presence of an economist or an accountant.

But woe, tis not so.
