I recently got my first betta fish (which is also the first fish I have ever owned). With some reading I have done about the topic, I have yet to find whether or not I need to have the fish in a circulated tank or not. Does it need the filter and circulation system?

That is a much debated subject in fish keeping circles. They don't HAVE to have a filtered tank, but will only do well in a bowl or non filtered tank IF you put in lots of work changing water every 2-3 days.

IMO it's better to have a pet betta in a filtered, heated tank. 2.5 gallon tanks are readily available and inexpensive and will be a healthy environment for your betta in the long run. No to mention WAY easier on you.

I think that the filtered and heated tank is the best way to keep a Betta.
They really do better with the warmer temperatures.
The filtered tanks will not need daily water changes and tend to be more stable, therefore healthier for your new friend.
I really recommend at least a 2.5 gallon for a single male Betta.
There are 2.5 minibow that work very nicely. You need to do a partial water change once a week.
If you decide to keep him in just a bowl, be aware that the amonia build quickly and will kill him. Partial water changes are needed every day to every other day at the Least! Watch the water temp. as he will be sluggish in colder water.

It needs to be in a filtered tank, preferably more than 1 gallon (I'd suggest 3 gallons for just the one and no other fish, which can't be male bettas) and heated to a fairly constant 75-76 degrees.

A good filter for Bettas is a small sponge filter powered by a slow, gentle air stream. Unless the room is always around 75 degrees(F),there should be a heater.
