The alternator has broken three times in a month on my 86 Suburu. Any ideas what I can do to correct that? It does not make sense that it should break so often

Make sure that the pulleys are lined up and the tension is correct. Other electrical issues like a bad battery can also kill an alternator. If the battery is over three years old, replace it. Check the battery cables as these like to corrode from the inside out.

If you have a battery more than three years old, it is recommended to replace that. A low battery can take out an alternator very quickly. I'm really not sure how else an alternator can "break".

A battery with a dead cel can fry an alternator. A dead cel battery will still start the car but will act like it is not charged up, it will turn over real slow. Put in new battery, while your doing that have the alternator checked because it might not be the alternator it could be just your battery with a dead cel.

what are you meaning in breaking?,going bad? or actually breaking?,maybe you have it overloaded,,maybe not big enough alternator for your car,if your buying new ones, you need to either buy a factory one.the ones at autozone sometimes go bad and ARE bad as soon as you get them, thanks

Maybe you're doing something wrong?

Take it to a shop and PAY someone to replace it.
