The effects of the Vietnam war was first it divided our youth as to our allegiance to the government.
When our soldiers came home, they did experience trouble adjusting as they were not the victors their parents were.
My husband was a veteran of a previous war and he said the difference was huge for years. The Vietnam veterans suffered as no other American veteran ever has, because they did not come home victorious.
Some were compensated, although many never quite got hold of life again in the United States, and the help they needed to accept the outcome of the Vietnam War was never provided these men.
As my husband predicted, time and a new war will eventually mask or heal most of the suffering of the Vietnam veterans, although many non military Americans suffered for years, and didn't know the reason.
I met some very nice (cool) Vietnam veterans a few years ago. They were maybe 15 years younger than my parents, and my dad was a veteran from WWII. as were all my uncles, and my godfather. These Vietnam veterans, they were doing remodeling work for me, and asked which war I was from. I answered, and they explained my region reminded them of some of their more interesting battles in Vietnam. I lived on a river, and toward evening, it was very colorful. There was a lot of woods and wildlife. He said they fought their battles from boats, and he could almost imagine the great explosions going off as they continued down the river, so as not to be targeted onland. Many of their successful missions were accomplished this way, and he could imagine huge flames higher than the trees over the other side of the river. He and his work partner served together, and one was very graphic, it was like deja vu to him.
After a few days, I asked if he did have remorse over not winning the war. he said "Heck no, I won my battles. I served my country, did the things I was supposed to do, reenlisted and tried to serve my country again and was called home."
He said "I'm proud of the things I did for my country, and would be arrested for each and every one of the things I did everyday over there if I did this here."
It was a readjustment, his marriage broke up for awhile, his business improved as he directed his energies toward something tangible, and he kept his partner. They have kept each other sane for 30 years.
It changed my friends as they returned from Vietnam, and they became secluded. As this man expressed the things he did, it explains a lot. He secluded himself from his family for a few years and rebuilt his life successfully. He couldn't do both at once. I liked these men a lot, as it is one of the first "success" stories I have personally listened to from a Vietnam veteran, thank you.

An effect is ongoing ignorance and arrogance as we repeat (USA) mistakes of foreign war displayed in the Vietnam War as in the "Iraq War". It was also significant because of media accesibility, the draft and the Civil Rights Movement.

For one thing, it showed how cowardly and vengeful the United States became when they lost their ruthless and ugly war.
