Go organic. Try corn gluten meal as a fertilzer alternative. It can be used both as a fertilizer and as a pre-emergent for weeds.

When you put down the fertilizers, don't let your kids play on the lawn for a day or so. There is no such thing as a safe fertilzer for kids, it's fertilizer--for your lawn.

No. And weed-and-feeds are even worse. Always read the "labels" on the bags and follow all directions. Most people over do it on fertilizers and you have a run off issue.

Wait a day or two, after you use it. If it doesn't rain in the first 24 hours, then wet down the area. After that time, it should be safe, for kids and pets.

All fertilizers can be harmful. It needs to dry after watering.
