I recommend "Sorcery and Cecelia" by Patricia C Wrede and Carolyn Stevermer. It's told in the form of letters back and forth between two cousins, and is a really fun book. It's got some action, adventure, mystery, humor and some romance as well.

The Immortals series by Tamora Pierce. I loved those books at your age. They have great, strong female characters.
