dont know but i live in the Seattle WA area and when i go to the mall or even Best Buy Electronics store they ask for the zip code or postal code whatever ya wanna call it i think it is for marketing reasons and how they know where to build stores

It's easier and quicker to write down or type in the postcode than the whole name of the city/town. Plus you won't have to spell it for them if your town has a difficult spelling.
They then know the general area the visitors are coming from.

It's to find out where their customers are coming from. Are they getting mainly local people or are they getting visitors to the city? If there are lots of people from one area but few from another, perhaps their advertising needs to be boosted in some areas but needs no increase in others.
