The absolute best thing is a cool mist humidifier and keeping his room really, really cool. Sounds counter-productive, but my ped. told me this and I did it and it really helped. Even cracking a window will help a lot if you can't get the humidifier. Other than that, Triaminic also works well.

Well, first of all, how old is he??? Second, how long has he had this cough??? If he has had the cough for more that 2 1/2 to 3 weeks and he also has had a fever with it, I would get him to the doctor first for a check up and see if it isn't a pneumonia. If not, then I like the Benylin medications for my kids, they work well, and the bedtime syrup lasts for 12 hours ....I have had more luck with this than any of the Buckley's for kids.

Before you do anything you should take your son to the doctor. Only your doctor can let you know what is safe to give him for a bad cough. Asthma, bronchitis, and an upper respiratory infection can also cause a bad cough.

This is straight from the May edition of Parents Magazine:

Cold Medicine Warning
If your child is under age 2, don't ever giver her cold or cough medicine without specific instructions from your pediatrician. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating the deaths of three babies who'd been given medicine containing the decongestant pseudophedrine. All labels say not to use these products in kids under 2 without consulting your doctor, but parents may think it's okay to just reduce the dose for babies.

There are many cough syrups on the market. One with an expectorant would be the best. However, he may have bronchitis or some upper respiratory infection which will only respond the antibiotics. You should take him to a physician.

You should call the pediatrician on call right away. It is serious when a baby gets a bad cough. They can go into cardiac arrest. So, call the doctor, get the right treatment. I hope he gets better soon!

u dont say how old your son is..... if he is under 1 he should not have honey at all!!!!! it could cause botulism. if he is under 2,ask your dr. about cough meds. it has caused some deaths,so dr. really dont recomend it anymore. he could have broncitis which requires antibiotics. try a humidifior and plain baby tylenol for fever.call your dr. if he is really sick.
