If you have a little money - cover a couple of songs (originals if you write) and go into the studio. A keyboard or guitar would be all you need to start with. Press about 50-100 CD's and create a resume. If you are old enough to do some shows- get a repetoire together and start singing around town. You have to get your name out there first. Record labels rarely hear 'first timers' without someone bringing you in the door.

You need a demo tape. You need to be recorded signing so you can send your tape to talent scouts or producers, who may or may not be willing to hear your tape. The producer from their would try to get you a deal with a record company.
You could audition for operas or musicals. If you can sing high notes, there's always a need for fat people and good singers on stage.
Of course there is American Idol, but everyone who auditions believes they're the next super star or at least feels they suck bad enough they're funny.

For starters your going to need to be a member of your local musicians union. Most major labels wont talk to you unless you are. After that, it's time to start "paying your dues." No one wants to spend time in the bars and clubs, but it's part of it. Getting the money and time to make a demo is a good thing to do, and if you write your that much better off.

first thing, you got to be humble. dont go into anything thinking you are the hot stuff, and you rock, because that will turn everybody off to your singing. always do your best, and dont let negitive comments hurt your feelings. you cant just go right to the top. im a musician and ive been playing music and singing all my life, you need to work up to something like that, i dont know your situation however, just being someone who can sing really good? the truth is if that is you, then you are a dime a dozen! tons of people out there can sing way better than you even. so here is the deal, you need to KNOW music, how to read it is very important, knowlege of harmony and rythm are extremely important. and for my sake please dont be another one of those people who dont really sing, they make lots of noise and sing WAY TOO MANY NOTES! but that is pop music these days. back to topic, so developing overall skills as a musician (not just a singer) is wildly important! going over the top with a bunch of woo woos and high notes is not cool either. if you cant sing a song without that junk, then forget it right now. i dont know your style but, there is a time and place. so many of todays singers are total trash. beyonce? she cant sing to save her life, i know lots of much better singers who arent sex symbols and famous. listen to frank sinatra, listen to billie holiday, those are REAL singers, and listen and see why they are the best of the best. they dont do crazy frills, they sing pure, wich is what you should do to practice and firm up your skills. take yourself out and meet some musicians get a band together, sing with them and go from there, or if you really want to try and take it straight to the top, get a couple of songs together , PAY quality musicians to back you up and record a demo and send it to everyone and their mom. for real though the best way is to work hard and put your heart into it. these over night sensation singers? well this is how that works, they have a look, and a producer sees the look as marketable, their skills dont really matter because in the studio and on stage they will process the heck out of their voice to make it sound good, they use pitch correction and compression and other sound tools to make the person sound like they can sing, but to someone like me who had ears into music before the advent of digital music, i can hear that junk, i know when they use it, it sounds terrible to my ears. so if you want real sucess, work hard. being famous is nothing compared to being a real musician and the enrichment of your life it will give you. make a demo, send it to everyone and their mom. and be yourself, dont try and please anyone but you. but if you like that pop sound and want to sing total junk like that, then i dont know what to tell you because that isnt music to me, its a product.......... dont be a product(ion) be a musician.

Find out the names of major labels' A&R's, sing as much as you can in public, professional venues(bars, nightclubs, open mic nights, etc), make demo tapes, hook up with other musicians, send your demos to local music stations.
