There weren't 50 states in 1776--just the colonies. The Declaration of Independence broke our ties with Great Britain.

(Besides that, we didn't have 50 states until Hawaii was ratified--in the 20th century.)

Take it back a couple decades/centuries...

Well. you see. We started out with 55 states in 1776 and due to expenses, we had to sell some off over the years. The same way we bought some from other countries. We sold some to Cananda, Russia, Mexico, and others.

Please learn to use spell check AND read your basic history book! Jeez -- this is covered in the first grade!
THERE WERE NO STATES IN 1776 because THERE WAS NO UNITED STATES!

based on the size of the colony it prompted that some colonies need more reps. and there were only 13 colonies that signed originally.
