This link explains 2 different tests you can do at home:http://jewelry.about.com/od/bakelitejewelry/a/care_id.htm
The absolute best way to discover if your piece is truly Bakelite, is to have an expert evaluate it. There are many very good imitations around which could pass the at-home tests.
There are several books available to use as reference material which you might find at your library.
Bakelite Bangle
(Price & Identification Guide - ISBN: 9780873418096)
Publisher:Krause Publications Inc
The Bakelite Jewelry Book
(ISBN: 9780896598676)
Publisher: Client Distribution Services
It is very easy for an amateur to be fooled into believing a piece is genuine Bakelite. As I said previously, an appraisal by an expert is your best bet.

Bakelite usually is black in color and extremely hard. It can be other colors but anything except black is extremely rare. It is used for structure and insulation in electrical components. Bakelite is a little brittle and can be scratched but cutting it is difficult requiring hard cutting tools. A google search on Bakelite will take you to a web page showing a part made of bakelite.
