I have not seen coverage of it, but simply found in the April 16 Newsweek that Senator "McCain's stroll through Baghdad's Shorja marketplace vest in sunglasses--as if nothing were amiss--turned out to be a photo op from hell."

Why was this conclusion drawn? How really should one go through the city? Was he in the "Green Zone"? That is the only area in Iraq that is safe. The media seems to overreact on items such as this. Or am I missing something? All responses appreciated.

Because McCain hasn't jumped onto the national hysteria bandwagon.

Senator McCain, Republican Presidential candidate has stated several times recently that Baghdad is safer since the surge began back in December.
Senator McCain said that General Petraus, Commanding General in Iraq, rode around Baghdad streets in an open unarmored vehicle.
That statement was not true. General Petraus always travels in an armored vehicle with a caravan ofcombat ready troops.
The picture you refer to of Senator McCain in a flak vest in Baghdad, surrounded by armed troops, with armored helicopter gunships overhead, Senator McCain had recently said that you could walk around the markets in Baghdad safely without armor or guards.
He was hypocritical.

please... he's only getting a SMALL taste of what Hillary and Obama are getting right now...

slanted words... big deal.

Maybe it WAS a photo-op from Hell... what did the rest of the article say?

Maybe McCain was following some bad advice to go over there for a photo op... he has no REAL business over there...

If he were just a concerned Senator that I would think it was very admirable of him to "check things out over there"... but we all know he is running for President and wants to pull a "my pet goat"...

None of these Senators who are not showing up for the jobs that we elected them for will be getting my vote... whether they are Dem or Republican... I only vote for people with good attendance... not a good campaign fund...

So every time they don't meet quorum in the senate is a time that I am marking them all absent from the jobs we elected them for already...
