808 is the TR 808 drum machine.

The pimpmaster is correct. 808 became real popular among west coast rappers in the late 80s/early 90s. There was even a semi-popular club band called 808 State that you should check out. :-) This one drum machine had a huge and loyal following in the music clubs.
