You should change them every 4 hours to reduce the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome

You van also reduce their risk of TSS by either avoiding tampons or alternating them with sanitary napkins. If a girl uses only tampons, it's important to choose tampons with the lowest absorbency that will handle her menstrual flow and to change the tampons frequently. Between menstrual periods, it's a good idea to store tampons away from heat and moisture (where bacteria can grow) - for example, in a bedroom rather than in a bathroom closet.

Because staphylococcus bacteria are often carried on dirty hands, it's important to wash your hands thoroughly before and after inserting a tampon.

Took for these signs:
sudden high fever.
Vomiting or diarrhea.
A rash resembling a sunburn, particularly on your palms and soles. After a week or so, the skin on your hands and feet generally begins to peel.
Confusion.
Muscle aches.
Redness of your eyes, mouth and throat.
Seizures.
Headaches.

Be Healthy

You would change a tampon as often as you would change a pad, although I realize there's no way of telling when it needs changing since you can't see it. Usually, your flow is the heaviest on the second and third days, so I would say to change it about every two to three hours. It's okay to use the tampon overnight, since you're not active. However, when you first wake up and start moving around, your flow may be heavier as it collects during the night. So you want to be sure to change it first thing in the morning. Most young girls start out with pads, if for no other reason than they can tell how much they flow and how often the pad needs changing. It's rather difficult at first to insert tampons, and it takes a little practice. But if you are comfortable with them, why keep it a secret from your mom. It's silly to let her keep buying pads that you're not using. Don't keep secrets from your mom, as she is actually your best friend. Good luck!

how the heck old is your mom?
Geeze I wore tampons when I was 13. That would have been in 1970. We were hearing the same stories then.
You cant wear them if you are a virgin
cant swim more than an hour
will break your hymen
all crap.... wear it until the string gets color
then change
nobody here knows your flow ,you can wear a pad at night as well as a tampon until you "get " your body.
However, I will go to yahoo hell if I don't say be honest with your mom.She is wasting her money. She might be irritated at first but she will get over it. After all you have been wearing them 2 years.
So how come you don't know your flow yet?

You must change them as soon as they are ready. You can tell if they are ready by tugging on the string, and if ready it will slide out easily.
Tampons come in different absorbancy levels, and you should use the least absorbant one that you can for your flow on that day, (ie, if your bleeding is light, use a slim or light tampon) This helps you avoid getting Toxic Shock Syndrome.
A tampon must NEVER be left in for more than 8 hours. Providing you won't sleep longer than this, you can use a tampon when you sleep. If you have a heavy flow, you might want to use a pad as well at night, in case the tampon leaks.
Best of luck sweetie!

Do not sleep with a tampon in, ever heard of toxic shock, google it if you haven't. If you are flowing light you should not wear a tampon, you should wear a panty liner, if you flow heavy a tampon is OK and will not harm you. I would say you should change it depending on your flow and how many times you have gone to the bathroom with it in. Normally I would say change it every time you go to the bathroom. At least change it every couple hours. But again everything depends on flow. Also you need to tell your Mom you wear tampons, it's not like she can ground you for your choice in sanitary care, just explain to her how you feel and tell her you would prefer her buy you tampons, there's not much she can do, plus it will help you to be able to ask her questions. If she gets to upset tell her you have been wearing them for 2 years, I am thinking she is going to get over it.

I would change it every 4-6 hours. I would also recommend that you wear a pad overnight while sleeping. Sometimes, leaving a tampon in for hours and hours can increase the risk of infection.

Why don't you tell your mom that you are wearing tampons? There is no reason to hide that fact. How often you change them depends. Usually it would be every 4-6 hours, but if you happen to have a heavy flow, you might need to change it more often. You can sleep with a tampon in, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Honey, you should change your tampons every 4-8 hours or you'll be at risk of having TSS (toxic shock syndrome). Remember that you period gets lighter after your 2nd day, so, don't use the ultra-absorbent ones too often, 'cause the more absorbency, the higher the risk of TSS and sometimes can be fatal. I recommend you to use them during the day, 'cause while you're asleep, you can be sleeping more than 8 hours straight, and TSS can occur. And if is not treated on time it can lead to death. Just try to use pads at night.

Yes you can use a tampon overnight, i have had a period for 13 years ( minus a couple 9 month stints lol) and i have always used tampons, overnight and during the day. no issues. Just change every 4-8 hours or 8 at night.
