In your first, check page 75 of Brent Force's Longstreet: A General's Battle at Gettysburg (Lincoln, NE: iUniverse, 2004).

As for item 2, there are many that think that Gettysburg was not strictly a defeat for Lee but some call it a stalemate and others a pyrrhic victory (a win, but one that cost far too much).

The skill of both sides was given plenty of evidence. The South had an urgency that cost them. The North had a disorganized complacency that cost them. Both had advantages and both had disadvantages. Try Boritt's The Gettysburg Nobody Knows (Oxford, 1997) and Gallagher and Nolan's The Myth of the Lost Cause and Civil War History (Indiana University Press, 2000).
