My son was just given a yellow bellied slider turtle that is about 5-6 in. already. My friend that gave it to him has it in a 20H tank and feeds it "pinkies" and turtle pellets.

if you can get a larger tank that would be good, as far as food, pinkies are actually okay, sliders need live food so mice will work, but you may want to try someting more natural like feeder fish. Also give it some aquatic plants, he will enjoy them for shelter and food.

Wait, you're feeding it pinky mice? You shouldn't do that. Pellets and an occasional worm are your best bet. They have similar requirements as red eared sliders. They need a UV lamp and basking structure. Also, you need to condition your water to remove the chlorine, you can get this at the pet store. A water pump would be advisable as well. If its about 6 inches, a 20 gallon tank would be okay, but maybe upgrading to a 30 in the future would be good. Hope this helps. Good luck!

The tank should be bigger- about 75 gallons. Water should be well filtered and heated to 75-80F.

The diet should be a mix of good pellets, some dark leafy greens (either lightly cooked to help them sink, or held with a 'vegetation clip' from the fish food part of the pet store), and some live or frozen/thawed 'fish foods' like insects, worms, shrimp, krill, etc.

That would be worse than keeping you in a closet for your entire life. Figure 10 gallons per inch of shell (males get to 8", sometimes more) unless you have a broad, low tank, like a wading pool.
