This is a very broad question but I will attempt to answer you. See, it all depends on what you are 'selling'. If it is one-of-a-kind that is self explanatory. If you are selling something that you personalize, such as wedding reception favors, you should start with100 and as the orders roll in you will be better able to judge how many to always have on hand. It really depends on what your profit margin will be. If your items) are high priced I wouldn't think you could afford to shelf too many until you know if it will fly off the shelves or not. If you are doing eBay you will only need whatever you are selling. I hope this has been some help to you; wish I knew what your product was to better answer you.

I agree with the person who suggested you have NO inventory. This will be the lowest risk and cost of running your business. Just make sure you can deliver when you promised. If you're buying the inventory already in a finished state, make sure the lead time is less than what you promise to your customers. If you're producing it yourself, make sure you can get raw materials and produce it in time. Carry as little inventory as you can!

why have any on hand? when you get an order, turn around and place your order w/ the supplier and have it shipped direct to customer from there.

why hold up money if you don't have too.
