Okay, my '90 Grand Prix even with a fully charged battery, the voltage always stays below 12.6, and it drains it til it dies. What can be the reason, why is it doing that.

Alternator and/or voltage regulator which is probably in the alternator. With newer cars, you wouldn't get more than fifty miles before it died on you.

You should be ale to get a rebuilt one cheaper than a new one. They'll charge you for the core deposit which you'll get back when you take the old one back in exchange.

If it's on top of the engine, it may not be much trouple to change. If it's on the bottom, good luck.

Alternator is not working. A quick test is check if the back bearing is magnetized. With the engine running touch a flat screwdriver on the bearing. If it sticks to the bearing then the alternator is charging.

First off....NEVER EVER remove the positive battery cable first on a battery that has just been charged, unless you like watching a battery explode in your face. Now, go have your alternator tested.

Alternator. Start the car and CAREFULLY remove the positive lead to the battery, if the car dies, it is the alternator. Known issues on those.
