What are your interests? What do you like to do? One person's idea of fun is not necessarily another's idea of fun. It's up to you to find something you like.

When I was young, I collected postcards. It's inexpensive, doesn't take up an incredible amount of space and you can have all your friends and relatives send them to you when they travel. I inherited a small collection from my great-grandmother who had some of the most fascinating cards - used as well as unused. Many of them have neat stamps and a few are really old. The inscriptions, handwriting, etc are a slice of history. This type of collection could be something you pass down to your kids and grandkids in the future.
Hobbies and collections are personal. They should reflect your interests and personality. Readers collect books. Beachcombers collect shells. I know many individuals who collect dogs, cats, frogs, country kitch, etc. It's not just toys, but clocks, dishes, throw pillows, towels - all adorned with the image of the object collected. My best friend collects angels. My aunt collects pitchers. My sis-in-law collects cows and hand bells. My mom is into teddy bears. My brother is into pigs. You can start with your fav and let everyone know you're collecting. With their help, you'll have a nice collection in no time.
As for a hobby, many like knitting or needlework don't actually have a huge cost, but will require a small amount of instruction to get you started. The big hobby stores usually have introductory classes to get you going.
You might have to try several before you find one you like.

If you find something that you like then that makes it fun for you! Ask someone else if they want to start collecting with you, then you can share and trade items when he/she gets something different from you.
1.) Postage stamp collecting is easy. Start by keeping the stamps that come on your mail & ask friends or neighbors/relatives to save the postage that comes on their mail too. Cut a square around the stamp and get an online stamp site to tell you how to properly soak them off the paper. (or come back here and ask) or go to the postoffice and see if they will show you the latest issues of stamps and buy one or two. Some will be cute and/or commemorate events, such as Valentines, or Olympics in years past, Mother's day, or as fund raising where a portion of the stamp price goes to causes like child abuse or breast cancer. There are websites that will send you a packet of all sorts of stamps just for being interested in their company for a small price, $2-5 dollars.
2.) You could also collect postcards. Anytime someone or you personally, go on a vacation or holiday even if it's only to the next town, ask folks to mail you a postcard, or buy your own. There are Clubs of people who will exchange postcards with you. look online. they are sort of like penpals but only for exchanging postcards. It does exist and it works=I've tried it.
3. collect those little bracelet charms. Buy a bracelet and add the charms you like. Seems very popular if you are the type that likes jewelry.
4. Magnets? The photo ones like disney characters or Elvis& Marilyn Monroe, shaped ones such as holiday gifts, reindeer and teddy bears, or even the silly ones that aren't very expensive in the shape of food and grocery carts(or "trolley" depending upon where you live).
5. Squished pennies, (called a Penny Press)like the kind amusement parks have? Usually the price is only 50cents plus the penny to be flattened. But some machines will also take nickels/quarters and flatten them with larger designs. But often those will cost more than 50 cents. Seems there are always Penny Press machines @ big tourist places. I went to Sears Tower in Chicago and had one made! But I also have about 45 characters from Disneyland, California, 12 from the Aquarium in Los Angeles and a few others from places near my home such as a Tree frog from the Rainforest Cafe in the mall. They are quick and easy souvenirs of where you've been and they don't take up too much space in your luggage if you're on vacation! There are penny press books to keep them in, but the only books I have came from Disney. There must be others tho....check online if you are interested. There is a website that locatesPenny Press Machines on a list by state so whereever you are you can see where to find them.

If you like sports than I highly reccommend collecting and trading Hockey cards. or baseball cards or whatever kind. They are guarenteed to appreciate in value so they are a good investment.
Also I always found it fun and card traders make a living doing it so its win win.
