The purpose: to obtain knowledge & skills for life and whatever profession you are pursuing. The effects? A college education doesn't necessarily guarentee you a high paying job in whatever you hold your degree in. But it sure doesn't hurt to have one.

The purpose is mainly to employ faculty members of various institutions and to provide trained workers for industry. The effects (not affects) are mostly to create a nation of barely literate bozos, who think they are educated, but can't understand why after 4 years of college they know less than the typical Indian elementary school student. Then they wonder why IBM and Microsoft have opened research centers in Bombay, instead of Cleveland.
