I bouught a used car to replace my wifes car that she totalled in a car wreck. We didn't want to start with brand new payments for the next 5 years or so, so we found a used car that we liked. The only problem with it was that it had the check engine light on. I took it to Autozone and did some research on the code that came up and it was a common problem with the car after it had a few miles on it and I found out it could take between 100-500 dollars to get it fixed if that was it (whivh I figured most likely it was.) I told the guy I didn't want to buy it with the check engine light on so he said he would fix it. We have already had to take it back after he "fixed" it since I had him put it in the contract that if it came back within the next 90 days he would have it fixed. Then I noticed that the light didn't come on the other day like I thought it should when in the on position. So I wanted to check with everyone else here to make sure I was right that it wasn't hooked up right.

It should light up when you start your car, then go out. It's a safety check to see if it is working.

Turn your key to the "on" position, but don't start...all the warning lights should be on, including the check engin, or sometimes "service engine soon"...

If it does not show up when you turn the car on Take it to your local pep boys, or auto parts store, they usually have a handheld diagnostics machine that they can plug in and tell you what up.

It should come on every time you turn the ignition switch on. It's always on when the engine isn't running and the switch is turned on.

turn the key to the on position and look to see if it lights up. if it doesn't light up then it's not working.
