I am older, old, dusty and moldy actually. But I was goth before goth had a name. I was a beatnik before there were beatniks. I was a black clad freak for as long as I started picking my own clothing to wear, my own music to listen to, my own books to read, my own movies to watch. We are explorers, questioners, wise and learning. We are dark and light, old and younger than a moment. We aren't really defined by what we wear, although most of us love black so much and have always gravitated to it. We aren't defined by our music, although that is usually not middle of the road, pop 100 stuff. We try to see the world realistically, which sometimes means we do see the bleaker side of life. We know there is no real santa claus or easter bunny, but some of us do believe in the concept anyway. We want the world to be better, expecting it to get worse. Lots of us are artists, writers, creators of some sort of something. And we are acceptors of death, life and worlds and concepts that are sometimes not accepted in the world of beaver cleaver and happy days.
Freak isn't a bad word to us; it is just a defining term. We have heard "going to a funeral?" most of our waking days. But what would the world be without people like us? It would be less. We are your cousins, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, neighbors and children. You can't catch GOTH. It is just who we are. And we can't be comfortable pretending to be other than this.

Being goth has nothing to do with what clothes you wear or music you listen to, it is a way of thinking and seeing the world. The clothes that goths wear and the music that goths listen to is just a reflection of that mindset. Goths see that there is extreme pain and evil in the world, along with the good. Instead of condemning it or ignoring it, goths accept these things as a part of life and try and enjoy the good along with the bad, since they can't stop the bad from happening. They are not obsessed with death, they just accept it as an inevitability. They do not try and cause more pain in their (or anybody else's) lives, since there is plenty to start with. Goths tend to be kind, intelligent, non-violent, emotional, and artistic.

Goth is a relatively common psychological disease usually seen in white teenagers while they are suffering from depression.

Symptoms include an even paler white complexion, dead black hair, dark circles around the eyes, fingernails often turn black, as do the lips.

The afflicted have sensitive eyes and thus have an aversion to common beautiful colors that are full of life (like the common colors of the rainbow). As a result, the afflicted have an attraction to dark colored clothing so that they do not hurt their eyes when looking at themselves in the mirror. This is also for courtesy to their friends, as they often acquire friends with the same disease to commiserate together.

The disease is very depressing in that it often makes the afflicted to dwell on the subject of death. This leads to further behavioral symptoms that include listening to music that sounds as if the living dead are performing, self mutilation, and general apathy is also common.

The cure for this disease is to develop a sense of adult maturity and a sense of belonging in the "real" world, that is to say, the realm of the living.

Sadly, some people fail to come out of this state upon reaching what society would call "adult" status. For those people, some common remedies include enlisting in the military, becoming a born-again Christian, or incessantly listening to positive songs like "Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night repeatedly until the symptoms recede (this may take months).

If you know a person afflicted with Goth, it is recommended that you shower them with positive thoughts about life and the beauty of living nature. Mention how beautiful a non-nutural color looks on them, and encourage them to be even more bold in wearing that color next time. Something like, "Some olive colored khakis would really look great with that yellow t-shirt you are barely showing."

If you need to know if you have contracted Goth, then it is unlikely that you have it. In a sick twist of fate, the afflicted glory in their decease and both proudly know and proclaim their condition to the world.

hmmm well that group doesn't define themselves well. They basically listen to what other goths listen to

Bauhaus
The Cure
Marilyn Manson
Sioux and the Banshees
Skinny Puppy
NIN

don't be a goth, be yourself. They have an identity crisis. I like some of those but I don't dress up like i'm going to a funeral.
