Yea...you should have got the installation code off of your computer Before installing a new HD...You can do that with Belarc Advisor.
If you still have the old HD then try to get your code off of it otherwise you're hoping for a new installation code which unfortunately won't pass the Window Validation...So you won't be able to use MS updates and you'll have a nag screen telling you that you don't have a "Genuine copy" of Windows...

same thing happened to me, i was like "ill call up microsoft and give it a try, what are they gonna do if i ask for a new key?" and the guy helped me out and gave me a new key. microsoft has actually pretty nice customer service. call em up i say

Open Regedit, go down to; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\currentversion\productkey.
It should be there.

The prevent this from happening again, write down the product key and store it in a secure location.

try this go to this site http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml and download their product key finder then you'll have your original key back then after it's been retrieved from the registry
