Your toe will not remain broken for over a year. It is possible that the bone scarring has caused pressure on your nerves in the foot, but it isn't still broken.

What they do is while you are our is to rebreak your toe and then place BMP (bone morphagenic protien) around the break to make it heal properly. It is the only way for it to get better. Without doing this it will just keep on getting worse. It will only hurt worse for one or two days, after that it will keep on getting better.

i've not had a bone graft but i have worked on wards where people have and its mean to be pretty sore afterwards. not sure if that bone forming thing mentioned above is used much here in the UK. they usually take the graft from your pelvis either front or back. as your saying it is still broken i'm guessing you suffered from non0union where the bone fragments fail to stick together
