try Hotwire.com - you can select a 2.5 star that might be more affordable.

You're so near downtown, and so, most of the hotels are expensive. There is a Marriott at Ashland and Harrison, a Crowne Plaza at Halsted and Monroe, and a Holiday Inn at Canal and Harrison.
