First you need to download and install the Vista Upgrade Advisor...this will tell you what you need to be able to run Vista...
But right off the bat you don't have enough RAM memory 512 really isn't enough...Vista even ran (I put XP Pro back) slow on my computer with 1GB of RAM...You really NEED 2GBs of RAM for all the "eye candy" that Vista has to offer and a third party Vidcard like ATi or Nvidia installed as well.

in case you rather need to run vista yeah it is going to run it. yet i recomend you in simple terms defrag the difficultcontinual and then do a disk freshen up. each and every pc slows down after a mutually because it gets a superb form of previous documents and that they get unfold out lots to. so derfaging and doing a disk freshen up will do your pc some solid. as for upgrading to vista in case you rather need it choose for it. im working it, and that i lvoe it. how ever it has some bugs that should be worked out. yet its new supply it some greater time and it would be the superb domicile windows yet.

A lot of people have speculated that windows vista will be using about 2GB - 4GB to hit the "sweet spot" for performance.
Also you did not list your video card!
Windows vista puts great use of high end video cards.
Quite honestly unless you have a great reason to upgrade to vista, you're better off sticking to windows XP for a while longer!
Good luck on your upgrade

Just to add confirmation to what others have said, I am in the process of purchasing a new Computer for gaming and am reading a lot of news/reviews/opinions on this.
Microsoft suggests 512 MB of ram just for Vista, and 1GB if you use Home Professional (the cool AeroGlass Interface).
However, for smooth performance you should have 2GB of RAM on your computer.
You have an old computer like mine is, we're pretty much in the same boat. I only have 256MB of RAM though. :)

You computer will run noticeably slower with Vista. I would not upgrade your system to Vista. Run XP for another two years and then buy a new one with Vista installed on it.
You should have 1GB RAM (minimum)
A 2.66 GHz single core processor is slow for Vista but it should run.
To avoid big surprises run Vista upgrade Advisor.
It will test your hardware and software.

DO NOT UPGRADE TO VISTA!!!!!!!! Stick with XP. Unless you know anything about Linux, XP Office is the best OS you can get today. If you do a little research, you'll find that microsoft EXPECTED vista to fail.

Not a good match
Get a machine with a duo core processor and at least 1Gb of memory, however I'd recommend 2Gb.
Better idea, stick with XP for awhile.
