Ofcourse the mane but they are a family cat and the king of their pride-- they do what all men want to do: F*&K, FIGHT, & FORNICATE- every man and kings dream :) to be great at all three. And they have Heart, They won't back down, they won't stop fighting - they are gonna win or die and so should a king or be wise enough to know when not to get into a fight because he is not ready to win the battle. Anothing good point that they are part of a pride - the tiger fights alone yes and is very strong but if a couple of lions get together they are king - sometimes a king is king because he has the stronges alies - there is wisdom and strength in numbers. The strength of a kingdom is based on its numbers and the Virtues of its leaders.

It is in part the fact they have that wonderful mane (similar to a crown don't you think?) But it is also because unlike what most people think the lions job is to protect the territory from intruders. This includes hyenas which attack and harass female lions, and other males whom if they take over will try to kill all the cubs the first chance they get in order to bring the females into estrus sooner. They also get involved in hunting when they are needed to bring down the larger more dangerous game like cape buffaloes.
Yes the amur tiger is bigger but it is not any more powerfully built. It is longer and leaner. It also lacks the mane which is actually protection from other males in a fight. These guys are built to duke it out with tooth and claw.
BTW the average lions reign is about 3 to 4 years. By that time they are generally so scorred that they are aften crippled.

I think you are on the right track. Lions are very regal looking creatures, and the mane definitely contributes to this appearance of nobility.
However, the lion is treated as royalty in it's natural habitat. The lionesses do all the hunting and the lion himself does little more than eat, sleep, and have sex.
And don't forget that the lion IS, in fact, a very powerful animal in addition to all of these other factors. I'm sure there are more, but this is just MHO. :-)

I think you mean feast fight and fornicate? And Yum, they do have it good most of the time, but their hours of sloth and gluttony are laced with moments of gore and ruthless violence. Almost all male lions die at the claws of another. And they call it the king of all beasts for a few reasons. In the saying, the word lion can be taken to include lionesses too, and when we take the whole pride into consideration, there is no fearcer presence in the jungle than a pride of lions--and the male lion sits atop that presence.

I think the name was given to them by big game hunters and explorers. In Africa, they are the top of the food chain. If they can't eat it, then it is just too big to be eaten.
