why do people think that western medicine and doctors are part of some conspiracy?

I've read many questions and answers by people who seem to think that doctors and the FDA are part of some conspiracy to deprive you of health and money, some even go so far as to accuse them of purposefully suppressing alternative medicine. why do people think so?
