Usually at walmart or K mart they will have sewing machines made especially for younger sewers. In my sources, i have included a web site where you can find an article about sewing machines for children.
The seccond web adress listed in my sources is a web site where you can compare sewing machines made especially for kids, at very affordable prices.
If you wanted to purchase a regular sewing machine, i would go with a singer... they are sturdy and come with many good features, such as reversable stitching, a see through bobbin cover, and some even have electroic needle threaders!
I suggest the Singer inspiration 4210.. here is a page where you can buy it online:
http://joann.com/catalog.jhtml?CATID=107093&PRODID=191887&source=search
joann's has a great selection in sewing machines, so youll proably be able to find a good one at a decent price online.
good luck :)

You only need 2 stitches - straight and zig zag. You need to factor in the cost of a yearly tuneup, which can be anywhere from 30 to 90 dollars. Not having the tuneup is the cause of 95% of machine problems. Fooling with the bobbin tension is the cause of the other 5%. You won't always save money, because there are plenty of clothing bargains if you don't mind using exploited, pollution-causing Chinese slave labor. But you will have a lot more choices. That seems like a good price. .

As much as I hate Wal Mart, it's a good machine because she'll be able to find lots of people who also have it, and can help her if she runs into trouble. The only thing I don't like about those little hobby machines is that you have to unscrew the sole plate to clean between the feed dogs, which needs to be done every time the bobbin thread runs out. A more expensive machine will have a plate that pops off and on without tools.

check for used sewing machines. stores that sell and repair machines usually have people that don't pick them up and then, they sell them. I prefer Pfaff, goin in a store and test drive one to see if you like it, then look for one. Maybe in the want ads, (for sale). Run your own ad Machine Wanted.
