Political effects of the Great Depression:

1. The Republican party would definitely be the minority party for over a generation (in fact 1933-1953). The Depression would be remembered for its Hoovervilles, dust bowls, and it brought out in a more profound way that the Democrats were the party for people and the Republicans were the party of business.
2. It was not as much as the rise of the totalitarian states as to their growing influence throughout the world. You see Mussolini, and the Nazis were beginning to show strength at the times of the Great Depression but it only deemed for themselves that their star had arisen and they would be the powers to be.
3. It brought about many social programs in the New Deal such as the CCC,WPA, TVA and Social Security etc.
4.With the rise in unemployment , there came to be an increase in the growth of discontent that even some rose to accepting whatever fanciful enterprise would come along and in which the totalitarian governments would be ready to seize.

In my opinion the most important political result of the Great Depression was the rise of totalitarian states throughout much of the world. Dictator wannabes thrive on crisis, and the Great Depression gave them the crises they needed (unemployment, inflation, etc.) to manipulate citizens in countries throughout the world to accept their policies (think Hitler, Trujillo, and many others).

In the United States, the biggest effect of the Great Depression was to encourge New Deal legislation and the rise of many socialist ideals in the country (i.e., social security).

Hope that helps.
