slavery as carried out by arabs has been going on a lot longer than the european variety, and indeed continues to this day (e.g., mauretania). How come nobody mentions this but insists on European countries apologising?

For two reasons.

First A segment of Western populations are comprised of people who take on guilt for what happened in the past. In my opinion they are incorrect in this assumption of guilt, but they do it anyway and it provides a stage for those who desire to preach about some type of wrong.

Secondly, those Arab/Islamic cultures still involved in slavery don't care what others say so talking to them or about them gains the speaker no satisfaction.

> How come nobody mentions this?

Not true. The remaining pockets of traditional slavery in Africa and the Oil States are well known, and the focus of many international campaigns. And also the new forms of slavery, like unpaid "Domestic Workers", child slavery, debt slavery, and human traficking all over the world.

"According to a broader definition used by Kevin Bales of "Free the Slaves", another advocacy group linked with "Anti-Slavery International", there are 27 million people (though some put the number as high as 200 million) in virtual slavery today, spread all over the world "

"The United Nations 1956 Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery was convened to outlaw and ban slavery worldwide, including child slavery. In December 1966, the UN General Assembly adopted the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which was developed from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 8 of this international treaty bans slavery. The treaty came into force in March 1976 after it had been ratified by 35 nations. By November 2003 104 nations had ratified the treaty."

On May 21, 2001, the National Assembly of France passed the Taubira law, recognizing slavery as a crime against humanity.

This kind of question is really just passing the buck. Pointing out that somebody else did it first or longer or worse is really just an attempt to take the spolight off the issue at hand, and essentially change the topic.

No discussion of such a large issue as slavery can be all encompassing. We really don't need to talk about every aspect or type of disease in order to talk about finding a cure for cancer. It's really just a distraction to say, "But what about AIDS! Aids is worse, we should look for a cure for cancer, we should be trying to cure AIDS.

Cancer and AIDS are both diseases, but they are their own topic/issue European slavery and Arabian slavery are both slavery, but there own topic/issue.

Dragging in a similer but different issue isn't helpful, it only muddies the water. In order to affect positive change, focus is essential. We must focus on 1 problem (or part of the problem), and not be distracted by red herings.

And black slavery which has also been going on longer than white slavery and is also still going on. Are black people going to apologise for that? And are they going to ackowledge the part I and many other white people played in hunting down Arab slave traders off the coast of lower East Africa? And what about the million and a half white British people who were enslaved by Black Africans and Arabs five hundred years before the triangular trade started?

Fair point.

However, in any argument, pointing out the other sides failings does not excuse you from getting involved with the main topic at hand: Europeans were involved in the transatlantic slave trade.

It is surely up to Arab nations to issue an apology if they see fit.

The fact that slavery persists should concern people of all races and we should all work to eradicate it.

The recent debate has only arisen because we are celebrating the anniversary of the European abolition of slavery - it does not touch on any other nation or type of slavery.

I am not qualified to speak on Arab slavery however if, as you state, it still continues, then we could hardly celebrate its abolition.

Well for a start, many people do not know enough about history to know that the Arabs were and in some areas today great slave traders. The European powers are the most recent powers before America and Russia and are very well known and famous. Therefore many people know of them but very little else.

However, the types who would be expouding history would mostly have a fair to decent knowledge of the Arab's dealings with slavery. But many of these accademics, these dishonest cowards either are too swept alone with the trend or have a hidden agenda. And part and parcel of that hidden agenda is the destruction of Western society. Beginning with propoganda(read lies) to influence people and to try to steal moral ascendency. These people have shouted loud enough to either fool a lot of people and/or scare a lot into silent submission. This is the main reason for it.

For these people are the type who cannot sucseed in any decent society as they lack the discipline and character to . Believe me, I associated with these types in the seventies. I know what they are like and at the very bottom of their motives are jealousy and a lack of moral and physical courage and character to make it and/or have a decent life for themselves. They look at their own lack of drive and character(they love indulging themselves-the whole thing started as the hippie revolution) and are against any society which calls forth character, talent , intelligence, morals and discipline. Therefore they seek to subvert our society, to make it appear small and themselves big and to tear down a society in which they do not fit in and does not suit them. They seek to do this by stealth, cunning, lies, intolerance, bullying and corruption.

However they have made a grievous error. They have taken on two of the most powerful forces in creation. Historical truth and Human Nature. What they seek to lie and distort about Historical Truth will come around with the facts and whack them squarley in the face. What they seek to pervert in Human Nature will have people realize the filth and corruption(many of these engage, support or tolerate some of the most filthy, perverted, putrid and morally discusting practices under the sun)the stupidity and perversion of their theories and smash these theories by the uncovering of truth and the courage to speak it. For ages these people have lied to us and sought to pervert history amongst other things. Too long they have bullyed, lied about and persecuted people who dare stand up to their nonesense with the truth. But their day is comming when truth be know, their evil exposed, their hidden agenda stopped, the damage they have done cured and they themselves stand before the world condemmed for what they are: tyrants, liars, bully, idiots, menaces and traitors. And that day is coming soon to fall upon them like judgement day. Lies will not stand against truth. For lies are but transient and temporary. Truth is mighty and for ever.

Can't offend the poor camel jockies, now can we? Also it is only debated between people who think they can get something out of an apology and those bleeding hearts who are not smart enough carry on a conversation.

It boils down to who has a conscience, and who doesn't. Look at what the Japanese did to China. No apologies there, either.
