What a great question. Well, so you can make a difference in someone else's life for one thing. Even here, on this forum, we make a difference in everyone's life, because we read everyone's answers (well, I do) about certain topics, and I believe I've helped some people see life in a different way and made them happier for it. Also, being alive is wonderful because you get to see the world, meet wonderful people, have special memories, experience falling in love, having great friends to share your life with, eating delicious food, contribute to society in some way so that you are not forgotten when you are dead, etc. I know what you mean, though. My parents are going to pass away soon, and I never want to get as old as they are now (82, 83). But they've lived a good long life. (but that doesn't mean I'm not going to miss them terribly.) and I have had thoughts just like you; just by looking at my parents, "what's the whole point in living when I can see that my father can barely walk anymore and my mother is in the first stages of dementia?" But I prefer to think that the world is not a stage- this is the real deal, and hopefully you'd better grab all of the happiness out of your life that you possibly can! Because when you're dead, it's Game Over.

What's the point of asking this question? ~~KNOWLEDGE!!~~ You live to gain knowledge (lasting, universal) of the reason you're here. That reason, that thing, that brought you here has to have always existed. (Thus the law of non contradiction(You can't have something from nothing)). You can't have something and non-something in the same place at the same time. Think you can? Picture a squared-ciricle. An item that has the properties of both a round circle and 4 sides like a square. Why can't you? Your imagination is so powerful, why can't you do it? =P Unless you think we all came from nothing, and when you're dead, you're dead (your body just rots). Then why even ask what's the point of living? You already concluded. =P

You should've asked this in philosophy. It depends on how you use your life. If you make a difference in the world, you "live" forever in people's minds. So, loved ones in a sense don't die as long as someone remembers them. So if you're a good person, its likely someone will remember you fondly after you're gone. You could also be remembered badly, but it isn't likely to last very long, and few people want to be remembered out of hate rather than love.
Along the same vein, historical figues "live" on as well. How many people still talk about Thomas Jefferson? His ideas are very alive today. As well as Jesus, Mohammed, or John Lennon.
Your question I think should be: what does it mean to live?

What was the point of eating a good meal if you're just going to go to the --------? The point in living is that what education and training the experience provides equips a percentage of the people with at least the basic prerequisite to continue their life lessons when after death they awaken in spirit. Failing this, there are always those who make that awakening knowing nothing, not their own names, knowing not more than a mortal just born infant knows.

Preoccupied with death? Are you really looking for an answer or just trying to connect? You aren't the only one out there who has asked this question but no one can give you an answer. YOU have to find a reason for living. Are you healthy or depressed? Have you always felt like this? I believe there always comes a point in someones life that something bigger than ourselves makes us start to wonder ...."What in the heck are we doing here and what is our purpose?" A long time ago I asked myself this question but I think I was really asking someone else. Yeah...if your not ready to look way beyond yourself and ask the man upstairs then you won't find the answer. Don't exist on your own....because there is a purpose....look around you at nature....the changeing of the seasons....trees that have their seeds that purpetuate themselves in renewal every year....things are not chaos ....there is a purpose to everything....there is something bigger than yourself. I don't think death is the end....and I do believe in God. Life is a gift...open it and see it's wonders. Even in the simple things.
I was depressed for four years.....but there was a light at the end of that dark tunnel. Don't give up on life....I didn't and I am so glad I didn't. Prayers to you on finding a reason for living.

I dun know what is your trend towards religion but my religion has a very logical answer of this question.
I am a Muslim and we believe that every human being in this world is just like a student in examination hall. we are given our customised paper to do life. Numbers would be given hereafter and accordingly we will be given places in hell or heaven. I think if we consider our lives on planet as a stop over and not final destiny it would be very helpfull. One thing is for sure our spirit is not for waste our sense of our being would be even after death. I would suggest you to learn Koran at once. You will probably get the meaning of your existance

Did no one every tell you that the destination you travel is not as important as the path you take to get there? Life is a learning experience. You are supposed to grow and become hopefully more than you are. Life is a gift that you have been given. What you make of it is your choice. If life is not giving you anything, just maybe you are not giving life anthing. No one ever said life was easy, but it is rewarding. Remember life is what you make it. There are no promises. Nothing worth having is usually easy.

I will be so happy if i know earlier i am going to day on particualr date or time. Because it is the ultimate solution for human life and feel happy. But even though we will have little pain because we are leaving all the beloved one whol loves us a lot, so before going to die we have to make them happy and as much as can we do the best we have to do for each and every one.

what's the point in dieing if you didn't live? It sound like your sad. listen go out and do something you enjoy go do something for someone else less fortunate see then what life is for.My version of the meaning of life is to make it as wonderful and beautiful as possible to see a child light up and smile to see the sunset over the ocean and to make it your mission to make everyones day. and then to die knowing you made someone happy and ready to help someone else. that's the point of living (according to me)
