Sex chromosomes exist either as an X chromosome or a shorter Y chromosome. Females have XX (two X chromosomes), while males have XY (one X, one Y).

We all have 46 chromosomes, or 23 pairs. Each of the 46 human chromosomes play a critical part in determining how a person's body functions. A karyotype is a collection of chromosomes found in an individual's cells. If a person has an extra copy of chromosome 21, they have Down syndrome. Sex chromosome abnormalities include Klinefelter's syndrome (XXY) and Triplo-X syndrome (XXX).

In humans:
1. Females have two X chromosomes and males have an X and a Y.
2. When you are looking at a picture of all the chromosomes lined up in order, the picture is called a karyotype. Look at the last pair. If they are two rather big chromosomes, those are two Xs and it's a female. If they are a mismatched pair with one big chromosome and one really small chromosome, that's an X and a Y, and it's a male. The Y is small.
3. When you view a karyotype, look to see if there are two of every kind of chromosome.
--Some disorders happen when a chromosome is missing. For instance, Turner syndrome is when there is only one X chromosome instead of two.
-- Some disorders happen when there is an extra chromosome in one of the pairs. For instance, if there are three of chromosome number 21, that causes Down Syndrome.

There are quite a few of these disorders. You can look on the Internet for these terms: trisomy, karyotype, chromosome syndrome. Those would be good search terms.

there is not a big difference between male and female chromosomes. both have 46 chromosomes as 23 pairs.and 22 of 23 are just alike in both but 23rd pair is different. in this pair one is again same called Xchromosome but other is different in male it is Y and in feemales X. note: this rule is not for all organisms but human beings follow this rule. in some animals the male has both Xchromosomes but female has one X & other Y like birds in some animals male lacks 1 chromosome mean 1 chromosome les as compared to female like MOTH
