The Intel processor is the better chip if you aren't running a server that requires multiple multi-core processors, ECC RAM, etc.

While the AMD is better if you do need those things (and it isn't directly competing with the Intel chip you've mentioned) you probably don't need them and using that chip will mean you pay more for your motherboard and RAM.

For a desktop system the Core 2 Duo is the best chip out there.

That Opteron is a server processor. It's competitor in the Intel world is the Xeon, not the Core 2 Duo.
